Near Snow Hill in Worcester County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Banks Broom House
This early 19th century small building could have been used for different farming purposes. It follows the typical worker cottage design that may have existed at the old Furnace Town. It had been used for many purposes before the Banks family purchased the farm on which it stood in 1880. Richard Banks converted the building into a workshop where he repaired clocks and watches and made brooms, growing broom straw on the farm. The second floor housed seasonal field workers who worked on the Banks Farm.
The rare and unique broom-making equipment seen within this structure was donated with the building when it was relocated to Furnace Town in 1980.
