Inscription.
Edward Devotion (1621-85) settled in Brookline around 1650, when it was a farming community known as Muddy River. Devotion's farm included apple orchards and pastureland for sheep and cattle. His son left a bequest to the town for public schooling: its legacy is the Devotion School. Although the house you see dates from around 1740, it contains a house frame that dates from around 1680. The 1740 structure was probably built by Devotion's grandson, Solomon Hill.
