Roan Mountain in Carter County, Tennessee — The American South (East South Central)
The Miller Farmstead
Nathaniel Miller built the white frame house you see in the hollow with help from family and friends. The forest you see around you now was cleared and used for grazing and growing crops.
This farmstead is preserved as a testament to the grit and courage possessed by the people who farmed the ridges and valleys of the southern Appalachians. With the advent of modern conveniences that make our lives easier, as well as more complicated, this simple way of life has virtually disappeared. We should not forget where we came from, nor should we take for granted the beauty, and even grace, that can be found in a life of simplicity. Without the struggle of those who came before us, our way of life would be impossible.
