Port Washington North in Nassau County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
The Mill Pond Historic District
Site of Cow Neck Village, first settlement in the area, dating to 1720. Originally Dodges Inlet, it was enclosed by a dam forming shore road in 1795. Site of Port Washingtons first school, c. 1825; first church: Union Free Church for Cow Bay, 1857; and first post office, located in McKees General Store, 1858. The mill pond derived its name from Cockss Mill, c. 1750 and Cornwall's Mill, 1795. Many homes in the area date from 1720 to 1860.
