Kearney in Clay County, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Welcome to Mount Olivet Cemetery
Mount Olivet Cemetery was established in 1868 by pioneers who organized the Mount Olive Church in the John Sleet Major home on December 25, 1856.
The original church structure was built in the northwest corner of Uriel Cave's field in the old Centerville area. In 1872, three years after Kearney was incorporated, Mount Olive Church changed its name to the First Baptist Church of Kearney. After a tornado in June 1900 destroyed the original church building, the congregation relocated to the center of Kearney, where it currently remains. In 1902, after having been interred for 20 years outside his mother's farmhouse, the remains of Jesse James were exhumed and reinterred in the James family plot at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
