Inscription. During the First World War (1914-1918), European farms became battlefields and American farmers found a new market for diary products. When the war ended and European farmers resumed production, Colorado dairy farmers experienced a depression. Many farmers looked for alternative sources of income.

Both individual wells and area agricultural ditches supplied farmers and ranchers with water. Windmills pumped water from wells into cisterns, and some farmers built water towers and reservoirs.

During the 1920s and 1930s, urban and rural families considered education important. The 1940 U.S. Census documents that persons aged 25 years averaged 8.9 years of school. Census statisticians record urbanites averaged 9.9 years of school. Their rural non-farm counterparts averaged 8.7 years and farm residents averaged 8.3 years.

From 1920 to 1940, dairy, poultry, and truck farms formed a significant portion of local agriculture. The 1930 U.S. Census records 3,542 dairy farms in Colorado. The Census also reveals that there were 2,210 truck farms and 1,635 poultry farms in the state.
