1. Lugert, Oklahoma Marker
Inscription. Austrian immigrant, Frank Lugert (1868-1958), founded the town of Lugert when the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation opened for settlement in 1901. Mr. Lugert ran the post office, train depot, and a general store. The town, with a peak population of over 400, thrived until 1912 when a tornado destroyed a significant number of homes and businesses. The town continued to exist until 1947 when the W.C. Austin Dam was completed for the Lugert-Altus Irrigation District and water soon covered the townsite. The town of Lugert was located 1 Ό miles southeast of this point.

W.C. Austin
Whose life was completely dedicated to the service of his god, his country, his community and his fellow man. Who never turned away from a call for his helping hand. Who asked as his reward for accomplishment only another chance to serve. Loved and respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him, the citizens of Oklahoma unite in dedicating to him this monument and the irrigation works comprising the project which now so rightly bears his name. Originally presented on the south side of W.C. Austin Dam by friends of southwestern Oklahoma, September 5, 1947

Erected 2006 by Lugert-Altus Irrigation District.
