Dowell in Calvert County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Former Commodore's Residence
U. S. Naval Amphibious Training Base
The commodore's residence was perhaps the most impressive building on the base, built in 1942 - 43 in the Colonial Revival style. It sits on the site of the Hellen family home, dating from 1809, and torn down, together with all other homes on the peninsula, to make way for the base. The building looks out towards the entrance to Solomons harbor and the Patuxent River.
