Belmar Park in Lakewood in Jefferson County, Colorado — The American Mountains (Southwest)
Glen Creighton Pump House and Matthews Water Tower
Inscription.
In Lakewoods semi-arid environment, water is an important commodity. Many farmers practiced ditch irrigation. Farmers also drilled wells, many from 600-800 feet deep. Farmers used windmills to pump the water out of wells and into cisterns and tanks.
The Glen Creighton Pump House sheltered the mechanisms of Glen Creighton Mutual Water Company.
Built circa 1918, the pump house originally stood near Glen Ayr Road and West 19th Avenue in the Glen Creighton subdivision. Consolidated Mutual Water Company moved the pump house in the 1940s for use as a storage shed. Lakewoods Heritage Center acquired it in 1991 and completed restoration in 1995 to its original appearance.
Some farmers also used water towers to store water. Oscar Matthews built this water tower on his farm near Wadsworth Boulevard and Grand Avenue in 1932. It was moved and restored to its original appearance in 1997.
