1. Griffith Park Marker
Inscription. This park was on county land when it was first developed and was named Sumner Park because it was next to Sumner School. It was acquired by a quit claim from the county in May 1961 and City park bond funds were used to build the rest rooms, add lighting, tot lot and landscaping. In 1968 the entire Lynoak/Mural neighborhood was annexed to the City of Claremont by a 77% vote of the residents. The park was renamed in 1971 for Jack Griffith, Supervisor of City Parks from 1959 until his death in 1970. After a career in the Marines, Mr. Griffith retired to Claremont where his wife was the Executive Director of the Red Cross for 19 years. Because he loved the outdoors, he went to work for the park department and had a reputation for finding equipment for parks under the tightest budgets. He was particularly fond of oriental landscaping and the rocks and trees that surround his plaque are a fitting memorial.
