The first Portal School was built in 1871 to serve families living in the Portal Township. Due to flooding in the area, the original school was replaced in 1890 by the schoolhouse you see here today. It was located just south of the Portal Township, west of Papillion, in the area identified today as 114th Street and Giles Road. The Portal Township was eventually abandoned around 1900 due to frequent flooding within the area.

Despite the township being abandoned, local farm families continued to use Portal School. To avoid the same fate as the original 1871 schoolhouse, it was moved in 1908 to a location outside of the flood area. This schoolhouse, along with other one-room schoolhouses throughout history, provided children from rural families with the opportunity for education. Without these schoolhouses, only children who lived within the towns would have been given educational opportunities. Each rural schoolhouse served a six-mile radius.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of rural-area students from School District #22 were educated within the four walls of this building until it finally closed its doors in May 1993. It was

the last one-room schoolhouse to be operational within Sarpy County. It was moved to its present site after the Papillion Area Historical Society purchased it for $1 on November 22, 1995.

Portal School hosts fourth grade students from the area each year to experience a day of instruction in the schoolhouse and learn about the challenges of education during the early pioneer days. Tours of Portal School are available by appointment through the Papillion Area Historical Society.

Site of Papillion's First House
The location where the Portal Schoolhouse now sits is the site of Papillion's first house, which was erected by Dr. David E. Beadle in November 1869. He operated his doctor's office and drug store out of this location beginning in 1874. The house remained in this location until it was removed in the late 1910s. Dr. D.E. Beadle was also Papillion's first postmaster.

Excerpt:  Tucked in the heart of downtown Papillion, the Portal Schoolhouse invites you to journey back to a simpler time — where one teacher, one room, and a handful of students were the heartbeat of a rural community.
Textbooks were precious and penmanship mattered. Often passed down through the children of families, they were expected to handle their textbooks with great care so it would last for the next student. Students spent hours practicing perfect script as it was a prized skill for clerical or teaching jobs later.
Attendance at school was seasonal. Depending on

weather and local needs, the school year lengths varied and would typically run anywhere from 6 to 8 months. Many children missed weeks at a time during harvest when every hand was needed at home.
More than just a school, it was the pride of the community. Winning the regional spelling bee or performing well at the Christmas pageant was a huge honor for a student and their family. The Schoolhouse wasn’t just where children learned their ABC's and 123's, it was also a proud centerpiece of rural life.
