Formed, 1784, from Monongalia. It included all or part of 17 other counties. Named for Benjamin Harrison, signer of Declaration of Independence and the governor of Virginia, 1781-84. Birthplace of General "Stonewall Jackson.
Taylor County
Formed, 1844, from Marion, Harrison and Barbour. Named for John Taylor of Virginia. This county was the home of Bailey Brown, first Union soldier killed in the Civil War. He was shot, May 22, 1861, at Fetterman, now Grafton.
