One of the most popular stores in Gladstone that operated for almost 55 years was Rouman's Candy Kitchen.

Brothers Leo and Jim Rouman immigrated from Katavothra Greece to Gladstone in 1903. They came from a family of eleven children and brought with them a family recipe for Cream Taffy called "Lovit". They established the Rouman Bros. Candy Kitchen at 821 Delta Avenue shortly after they arrived. They made a variety of candy, all homemade.

Jim moved to Wisconsin and opened a candy store and Leo settled in Gladstone and married Nicholeta Marrosis in 1911. They made their home at 801 Minnesota. They had three sons that graduated from Gladstone School and all of them served in WWII.

Over the years other family members came from Greece and worked in the store as well as young people in the area.

The Rouman's added an Ice Cream Parlor and made homemade ice cream on site. In 1933 they moved the store to 901 Delta Avenue on the corner of 9th Street. The Rouman's were a very popular, well-liked family in the area. They retired in 1958, and Leo passed away in 1967 and Nicholeta in 1976.
