1. Striplin Gold Mine and Carr Creek Placer Marker
Inscription.
Shortly after the removal of the Creek Nation to Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears, the Alabama Gold Rush began in Cleburne County. The Striplin Gold Mines were constructed in the Carr Creek Placer in approximately 1837. The majority of the placer (deposit of sand and gravel containing precious metals) is within the Frank Spain Scout Reservation. After the discovery of gold in California in 1849, the interest in gold mining slowly waned and the nearby mining town of Chulafinnee declined. The gold along Carr Creek and its tributaries was extracted from vertical shafts and horizontal excavations in quartz and schist. The vertical mine shafts with intact timber supports are located on the west side of County Road 11 one-quarter mile from this point. Some shallow vertical shafts were constructed to the east of County Road 11 within a campsite in the present Camp Sequoyah. Gold panning continues in Carr Creek and its tributaries as Boy Scouts carry on the mining tradition in the Chulafinnee area.
