Valmeyer in Monroe County, Illinois — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Laurie A. Brown
August 27, 1961 - July 31, 2024
Laurie began her career with the Village of Valmeyer when she won election to the office of Village Trustee in April, 1989. Following the Flood of 1993, she moved into the and position of Village Clerk and Collector upon the retirement of Mary Ann Sondag.
Either behind her desk or out in the community, she greeted everyone with a smile, and we all know if she was sarcastic or sassy with you, she either really liked you, or you were deserving of her scorn.
Laurie served as the Valmeyer Village Clerk for more than 30 years, but she was not Just the Village Clerk. She was the Village receptionist, HR Department, Accounting Department, Permitting & Zoning Department and the Complaint Department. She also provided therapy sessions for those needing those services.
Laurie was always willing to help her co-workers. Over the past 30 years, if BJ or Duff, Tom, Tater, Rick or Marty, or Brad, Justin or Jeremy needed any help, she was there to help read water meters, push snow, order parts or possibly ride in a backhoe bucket, a time or two.
Laurie was the perfect fit for the Village Clerk position. She had a lasting impact on the community and will be deeply missed. We will be forever grateful for our time with Laurie.
Laurie's love for Christmas was well represented in the Village. She always had new ideas of how to enhance the Village holiday displays, and made sure new purchases were planned for each annual budget. She could always be heard asking Village Treasurer Larry Andres, "Larry, how much can I spend on Christmas decorations this year?????" Village officials will continue to honor this tradition, and add more Christmas decorations in her memory for years to come.
