1. Welcome to Ludlow, MA Marker
Inscription.
Incorporated on February 28, 1774. Ludlow was originally part of the city of Springfield. The origin of the name will probably always remain a mystery but the most likely explanation is that the town was named after Roger Ludlow, an early prominent New England citizen who played a large part in building up the town and taking care of its citizens. Ludlow was largely an agricultural community with many dairy farms and lush, fertile farmland. The Ludlow Manufacturing Company, formed around 1900 by Charles Townsend Hubbard, helped shape the industrial part of the town by providing work at the Ludlow Mills, housing, a library, schools, playgrounds and a clubhouse. Ludlow was also home to many sawmills and gristmills, utilizing the power of the surrounding rivers and streams, one of which is the nearby Chicopee River. The Ludlow Mills were known world wide for its production of jute yarns, twine and webbing. Ludlow is a culturally diverse and tight knit community.

The Ludlow town seal was designed to reflect both the agricultural and industrial backgrounds which shaped the town into the beloved community it is today. The clock tower, along with Mill #8, is a focal point in the town and was chosen to represent the industrial change in the town.
