| | Gemeentelijke Monument | |
The IJsteeg (Ij Alley) is a sloping road that runs up the Spaarndammerdijk. This street layout was often used in the past to lengthen the slope of a road against a dike. This is where the oldest part of Halfweg, formerly known as Polanen, originated. The skippers of the Amsterdam barges on the canal between Haarlem and Amsterdam would pause in the oldest surviving house in Halfweg, Dokter Baumannplein 17.

3. IJsteeg / Ij Alley
The alley is basically a brick-paved pedestrian walkway connecting Dubbele Buurt and Dokter Baumannplein, as seen here. As noted on the marker, the alley connects the two streets set along the top and bottom of the dike, running diagonally so as to decrease the slope of the alley, which would otherwise be fairly steep.
