Hambleton's Mill
The Hambleton family erected this water-powered grist mill in 1813. By 1837, their remote settlement had blossomed into the village of Sprucevale. Begun in 1834 and completed by 1846, the Sandy and Beaver Canal spurred regional development by providing an opportunity to export local products to distant markets. This waterway connected the Ohio and Erie Canal in Bolivar with the Ohio River at Glasgow, Pennsylvania. Sprucevale's prosperity, however, was short. The village declined alongside the canal over the following decades from flooding that damaged the waterway in 1852 and railroads that more efficiently transported goods. Restored in 1974, Hambleton's Mill attests to a bygone moment of bustling industry in the Little Beaver Creek Valley.
