The Old Sheriff's House and Jail was built in 1882. The home is a Second Empire-style house with a Mansard roof, the only such style in Crown Point.
The jail was expanded twice. The renovations were completed in 1910 and 1928, extending the jail beyond the home and to East Street. After holding the county's prisoners for 92 years, this jail was closed when the new Lake County Government Center opened on North Main Street in 1974.
The building was vacant for 15 years before being purchased by the Friends of the Old Sheriff's House. The Old Sheriff's House and Jail was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
