Inscription.
Illustrious Texas Ranger for whom this county is named. Born in Kentucky; came to Texas 1876; became rancher-trail driver. Served in Texas Rangers 1882-1906. By order of the Governor, aided in preventing Fitzsimmons-Maher world title prize fight, El Paso, 1896. Helped solve and halt South Texas cattle thefts. Served in Texas Legislature, 1909-1911; was County Judge of Brooks County, 1911-1939. Married Virginia Wilborn.

J*. A. Brooks was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky on November 20, 1855. He moved to Collin County Texas about 1876 where he operated a farm and a ranch. Brooks joined the Rangers in 1883, serving in Company F under Captain Shely.
