1. Grand County Jail Marker
Inscription.
This building was built specifically for law enforcement purposes and is the oldest incarceration building still existing in Grand County. Previous jails were “cells” constructed within buildings that were used for other purposes. It was first built at the west end of the county block in Hot Sulphur Springs, slightly north of the present jail.

It was in use until 1938 when a jail was incorporated in the new court house construction. It was moved to this site in 1976.

Excerpt:  The Grand County Jail in Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado, traces its origins to the county's formation in 1874. The jail was established shortly thereafter to provide a secure facility for holding individuals arrested and charged with crimes within the county. The marker is mounted directly in front of the 1897 Jail, on the left side of the walkway.
