The above brass plate is the only remaining identification of the USS Grayling lost in WWII. It was removed from the forward marker buoy on December 7, 1941. Plate was mounted on top of buoy that could be released from inside the sunken submarine in peace time. All identification is removed from submarines in war time.
USS Grayling (SS-209) was the tenth Tambor-class submarine to be commissioned in the United States Navy in the years leading up to the country's December 1941 entry into World War II. She was the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the grayling. Her wartime service was in the Pacific Ocean. She completed seven war patrols in the following 20 months and is credited with the sinking of over 20,000 tons of Japanese merchant shipping and warships. Grayling received six battle stars for her World War II service. She was declared lost with all hands in September 1943. Her fate remains an unsolved mystery.

On 19 August, she reported having damaged a 6,000 ton freighter near Balikpapan, and the following day told of having sunk a 250 ton Taki Maru type pocket tanker by gunfire in Sibutu Passage, taking one man prisoner. received direct from GRAYLING. On 23 August, she completed a special mission at Pandan Bay, Panay, delivering cargo to guerrillas. This mission was reported by guerrillas. She was not heard from after 20 August 1943, and on 30 September 1943, GRAYLING was reported as presumed lost.
