The Virginia National Guard State Headquarters Building and Site are models of energy and environmental innovation.
Sustainable Energy Use
The Headquarters Building's energy source includes electricity provided by a solar photovoltaic (PV) field, which is located southwest of the building. The PV Field is designed to offset building electrical use by 20%.
PV output of 109 kW per hour reduces the load of the building on the electrical grid, with up to 156,614 kWh saved annually.
Underground Bioretention Facility
The site was designed with storm water collection and treatment best management practices (BMPs) to protect the watershed, accomplished with installation of Bioretention Facilities, the low lying depressions along the exterior of the property. The basins are designed to collect, absorb, and filter runoff from the site during rain events. Runoff can contain chemicals and sediment that harm aquatic life downstream in the James River. The Bioretention Facilities remove these by mimicking the natural filtration processes of native plants, soil, and gravel.
