Ocean Springs in Jackson County, Mississippi — The American South (East South Central)
Washington Avenue
This Ocean Springs postcard was mailed from New Orleans for one cent in August 1905. The writer tells her brother in Nebraska that the morning here was very warm, with thunderstorms. She tells him about the outbreak of "Yellow" along the Gulf Coast, and that from Louisiana to Ocean Springs she says several hundred have caught it. She says she feels she'll be fine as long as she takes care of herself.
Perhaps this visitor came to Ocean Springs to enjoy the health benefits of warm therapeutic baths in mineral-rich spring waters full of iron, sulfur, and magnesium at Marble Springs on Old Fort Bayou? Perhaps she enjoyed the cooling breezes off Biloxi Bay as she stayed in one of the many handsome guest hotels that dotted Washington and Jackson Avenues?
There is history everywhere in Ocean Springs, taking place in the shade of heritage Live Oaks.
