1. The Fort Mose Militia Marker
Inscription. Captain Menendez is clearly proud of his militia and it is easy to see why. Clad in blue and ready for battle, some of these soldiers were previously enslaved by the Spanish, while others journeyed here from British plantations in the north. Having achieved their freedom, they are all united under one common goal: protect the fort and St. Augustine.

In addition to protecting Fort Mose, the militia also defended the most important city in Spanish Florida - St. Augustine. The Spanish did not give the militia this land unintentionally. They had always intended for the militia to be a first line of defense against invaders from the North.
