Inscription.
Site of the chief village of the Senecas from about 1750. Destroyed September 7, 1779, with its fields gardens orchards and 50-80 houses.

Col. John Butler's buildings at the mouth of Castle Creek were burned the same day. These had served as the headquarters for British troops during 1779.

Seneca burial mound located 200 feet S.W.

The stockade and blockhouses built by Sir William Johnson in 1756 for the defense of the Senecas against the Canadian French and Indians were situated between the burial mound and castle creek.

Rev. Samuel Kirkland missionary and later interpreter with Sullivan's troops lived in this village in 1765-66.

The site of older village (Canachestage) was 2 miles south near the White Springs.

The first permanent white settlement in Geneva was made on the shore of Seneca lake in 1787.
