1. Military Road and Old Plank Road Toll Gate Site Marker
Inscription.

The old Military Road, completed in 1837, served to connect Fort Crawford in Prairie du Chien, Fort Winnebago in Portage & Fort Howard in Green Bay. To pay for upkeep, a Toll Gate was placed on Winnebago Drive in the 1850s and collected a 2-cent toll for every vehicle, sled, sleigh, or carriage until 1916.

In 1932 the FDL DAR Chapter dedicated a marker on the original Toll Gate site at the NW corner of Garden Drive and Winnebago Drive. In 1986 the marker was relocated to Roosevelt Park due to road safety concerns. This new marker preserves the historical significance of the Toll Gate and honors the work that made transportation and commerce possible.
