Inscription.
In his second term as mayor in 1910, Dr. Arlington G. Horine, M.D., built a home and drug store that is arguably the showpiece of Brunswick's Square Corner.

Having established his first pharmacy in the "town between the tracks" in 1890, Dr. Horine moved his business and home to the center of the then-new downtown as the expanding B&O railroad yard compelled merchants to move up the hill.

The interior of the drug store also served as a soda fountain and confectionary. It was adorned with a tin ceiling, an intricate tile floor, a very large mirror, and beautiful woodwork throughout the store. In the back, Dr. Horine prepared the medications.

Horine's was popular for sandwiches, butterscotch and chocolate sundaes, milkshakes, ammonia and cherry cokes made from maraschino cherries, and lemon phosphates.

Dr. and Mrs. Horine, their son Lee (who took over the business following his father's death in 1956), and Mrs. Eleanor Shewbridge were well-known, friendly faces behind the counter for generations of Brunswick residents.

Dr. Horine was also a practicing physician. From 1891 to 1903, he served as surgeon for the B&O railroad, as well as Brunswick's Health Officer. He also served as mayor from 1906 to 1914.

Horine Building
Having established his first pharmacy "between the tracks" in 1890, Dr. Arlington G. Horine built his signature drugstore and residence in 1910 as the railroad yard expanded and forced merchants to move the business district up the hill to Potomac Street. The building still stands today and is adorned by a beautiful mural that in part depicts Dr. Horine, who also served as Chief Surgeon of the B&O, Brunswick's Health Officer, and Mayor from 1906-14, looking out the window.
