Inscription.
From Brunswick's earliest days, this view looking west from East Potomac Street has been much photographed. Pictures show an impressive array of commercial buildings forming the heart of a prosperous downtown shopping destination for local families.
,br> By 1910, when A.G. Horine built his pharmacy on the southeast corner, the square corner at Maple Avenue and Potomac Street was complete with a business on each corner.

Moving clockwise across Maple Avenue from Horine's (1910-1970) was the Smith and Carlisle general store, which occupied the ground level of the four-story structure which came to be known as the Meadows Building. The general store was followed by a series of popular night spots and restaurants.

On the opposite side of Potomac Street was the Savings Bank of Brunswick (1899-1910), later the Bank of Brunswick (1919-1997), and now City Hall.

On the northeastern corner was the Post Office (1901-1912), then later a storefront best remembered as S&N Katz Jewelers (1946-1980), which specialized in railroad watches. In the interim years, it was occupied by grocery stores.

Next door, Darr's Tavern long served Brunswick as a confectionary and tavern (1914-c.1978). On the first block of East Potomac Street were restaurants, home and auto shops, doctor's offices, dry cleaners,

liquor stores, and purveyors of fine clothing, such as The Lace Store (1915-c.1967) with its annual Christmas Toyland.

While some of the businesses evolved and changed hands over the years, the basic configuration remained the same until a devastating 1994 fire destroyed several businesses. That area was subsequently developed as Square Corner Park.
