Inscription. The sounds of muskets and marching militia men signal the end of your flight to freedom. While your journey may have been a success, it is important to remember the hundreds of men, women and children who never made it to the safety of these walls. Some died in harsh swamps, others were killed trying to escape, and some were captured and returned to plantations. We may not know their names or stories, but we can honor their memory here at Fort Mose Historic State Park.

Though Fort Mose would eventually disappear, its history reminds us of the struggle for freedom Blacks faced in America for centuries. For the men and women who found sanctuary here, freedom was earned. For many more, it would be years before true freedom was achieved across the nation.
