Memorial Park

, Welcome to Mount Rainier's Memorial Park , created in 1926 to honor citizens who distinguished themselves in service to the community., For many decades, the park served as the location for civic celebrations in the heart of Mount Rainier. The streetcar station, businesses, post office, and town hall surrounded the park., At the beginning of the 21st Century, Memorial Park was a neglected public space without trees and in the shadow of abandoned buildings. Many local residents found the location inhospitable. With the revitalization of the surrounding historic buildings and construction of the Mount Rainier traffic circle, a new vision for the park and its surroundings emerged., In 2018, the City began a partnership with the University of Maryland's graduate program for Landscape Architecture to gather community feedback on a redesign. With financial assistance from the American Rescue Plan Act, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, the City completed renovations in August 2024, creating a welcoming green oasis., The redesign includes better stormwater management practices with installation of rain gardens and permeable surfaces, native plants and trees to improve ecological health, and improved sidewalks and patio space, all with an eye toward creating beautiful spaces that encourage congregation., Today, Memorial Park honors all citizens who distinguished themselves in service to the community , including those who envisioned the park as a welcoming green oasis, those persons who worked to transform a once segregated town into a multicultural city, and those who will nurture both the park and the City of Mount Rainier in the future., [Caption:] , The white stuccoed First National Bank built in 1918 is a landmark in the Mount Rainier National Register Historic District.,
