Sul Ross "Art Colony"
1932-1950
The Art Department at what was then Sul Ross State Teachers College (1923-1949) began as the Department of Drawing and Domestic Arts in 1921 and became the Art Department by 1926. In 1932, the Art Department introduced an Art Colony for the summer sessions for both students and interested individuals. The Art Colony proved to be extremely successful, bringing some of the best regional artists to Alpine during the summers until 1950. The Sul Ross Art Colony was the longest running art colony in Texas. Mural design by Carol Fairlie. Painted by Sul Ross Art Club.
