A Visit from the President
Theodore Roosevelt had a great love for naval history and strategy and his career as a politician and statesman intertwined with Olympia several times.
Roosevelt visited Olympia twice in his career as a politician. The first occurred on September 28, 1899. Then the governor or New York, Roosevelt came aboard Olympia to meet with Admiral George Dewey while the ship was at anchor in New York Harbor.
Roosevelt's second visit occurred on August 17, 1903. Now president, Roosevelt came aboard during a fleet review off Long Island. He rallied Olympia's officers and crew on the quarterdeck and addressed them with a grand speech in typical Roosevelt fashion.
