1. Nile Swim Club of Yeadon Marker
Inscription. Opened in 1959, it is the nation's first private swim club owned and operated by African Americans. Led by three civic-minded families who were denied membership at the local swim club, community members united and purchased land for their own facility. Although the Nile is open to all, it has fostered and encouraged aquatic, civil, social, and cultural opportunities that otherwise would not have been available to African Americans.
