More about this marker. Per his wishes, after his death in 2015, Cardinal George was buried at his family's plot at All Saints Cemetery; his name is etched onto the family's gravestone. About a year later, on April 21, 2016, the Archdiocese of Chicago dedicated this ledger stone at Cardinal George's gravesite, outlining his career as a leader in the Catholic Church and engraved with his coat of arms.
Regarding Francis Eugene George. Francis George was the first native Chicagoan to serve as Archbishop
of Chicago. Born in the city in 1937, he attended parochial school on the city's Northwest Side and seminary in downstate Belleville. After six years as Bishop of Yakima, Washington, and less than a year as Archbishop of Portland, Oregon, in 1997 Francis George was named Archbishop of Chicago, replacing long-time leader Cardinal Bernadin. In 1998, George was elevated to the College of Cardinals. Cardinal George retired as archbishop in 2014. He died on April 17, 2015.
