1. African American Cemetery Site Marker

Inscription. The entirety of these Historic Cemetery Grounds were originally all property held by the Town of Milton. In 1971, the upper portion was purchased by the Milton Woman's Club for the price of $1. In April 2023, the Town of Milton transferred the African American portion to the Milton Woman's Club to again join the two cemeteries as one site. Also in April 2023, a volunteer Cemetery Committee applied for and received $25,000 from Danville Regional Foundation's "Make More Happen Together" grant to go toward the African American section's restoration. In the process of debris clearing, many uninscribed field stones were revealed, along with unmarked depressions. Believing these to be burial sites, the utmost care has been taken to ensure the site receives the respect and preservation deserved. Consultations with cemetery specialists in both North Carolina & Virginia will be ongoing.
