1. Peninsula Point Light Station Marker
Constructed in 1865 with Cream City Brick from the Milwaukee area, this tower is all that remains of the Peninsula Point Light Station. The site once included numerous outbuildings and sidewalks: traces of these are still visible. After building a new lighthouse 6 miles to the south on the shallow reef that extends out from this point, the Coast Guard deactivated the light in 1936. The site became part of the Hiawatha National Forest in 1937 and the picnic area was developed with the help of C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) workers. The keeper's dwelling attached to the tower burned in 1959 and was later demolished.
