Inscription.
Moses Bates was part of a survey party which passed the present site of Hannibal in 1818. Bates returned to the site to survey and lay out Hannibal in 1819.

By 1836, much of Hannibal's land was owned by Stephen Glascock. Glascock filed a plat map in 1836 which set aside a public landing from Market Street (Broadway) to North Street, the area known as "Glascock's Landing." Hannibal was incorporated as a town in 1837, as a city in 1845. By 1860, Hannibal was the third leading commercial center in Missouri.

The riverfront area was vital to early development of the community. In 1847 alone, 1,020 steamboats landed. These boats brought people and goods and took away numerous agricultural products and manufactured articles. Hannibal contributed to the river trade by providing several pilots and even saw construction of a few steamboat hulls.
