Né près de Lyon en 1775, André-Marie Ampère est professeur d'analyse à l'Ecole polytechnique depuis 1809 lorsqu'il assiste à l'expérience d'Oersted sur la déviation de l'aiguille aimantée par un courant électrique : il en construit la théorie en quelques jours et pose ainsi les bases de l'électrodynamique. Dès 1821, il émet l'hypothèse que les molécules des corps sont l'objet de "courants particulaires" dirigeables par l'aimantation. Il invente aussi le galvanomètre et le premier télégraphe électrique. Membre de l'Académie des Sciences en 1814, il est élu à la chaire de physique du Collège de France en 1824. Entre 1818 et sa mort, en 1836, Ampère habite cette maison, qui lui sert également de laboratoire.

Ampère Discovers Electrodynamics
Born near Lyon in 1775, André-Marie Ampère was a professor of analysis at the École Polytechnique from 1809 when he witnessed Oersted's experiment on the deflection of a magnetic needle by an electric current. He developed the theory in a few days, thus laying the foundations of electrodynamics. As early as 1821, he hypothesized that the molecules of matter are subject to "particle currents" that can be directed by magnetization. He also invented the galvanometer and the first electric telegraph. A member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1814, he was elected to the chair of physics at the Collège de France in 1824. Between 1818 and his death in 1836, Ampère lived in this house, which also served as his laboratory.
