Located access the bay, the US Cast Guard has maintained a continual presence in San Diego since 1935. From its humble beginnings, a base was constructed on 23 acres of tidelands and eventually formed Coast Guard Sector San Diego.
Mr. Bernard J. Trifoso
Bernard J. Trifoso attended Columbia University for Medic Training in 1943 and transferred to Coast Guard Base San Diego. Trifoso volunteered to be a medic on the LCIs and was assigned to LCI 325 and LCI 94.
Medic Trifoso served 3½ years with the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He served two theaters both in Europe and the Pacific. He tended to the injured during the Battle of Normandy at Utah Beach on D-Day, and on Okinawa, Japan before and after the atomic bomb. He is a recipient of two bronze stars for his bravery and medical prowess when attending to a fleet of injured men for hours before the arrival of additional aid.
On February 5, 2021 The City of San Diego declared Bernard A. Trifoso Day by proclamation.
Elmer F. Stone
Commander Elmer F. Stone was the first US Coast Guard Aviator to receive his "wings of Gold" from Naval Flight Training 1917. Commander Stone Pioneered Coast Guard Aviation by successfully employing Coast Guard craft to conduct search and rescue operations. Commander Stone's Uncanny foresight and aviation skill, as well as his fine qualities as a leader, made him respected and beloved by all who served under him.
