The MTLB was developed to fill the modern utility needs for a mechanized army. Built in Russia, the MTLB became the Soviet's armored prime mover for a wide variety of battlefield missions. It served as a platform for command vehicles, a radar station, an anti-aircraft missile launcher, an anti-tank guided missile launcher, a mortar carrier, an armored personnel carrier, a specialized engineering vehicle, an ambulance, a repair and recovery vehicle, a chemical warfare detection vehicle, and a gun and crew prime mover. As with other Russian-designed vehicles, crew riding conditions were extremely poor. Thirteen soldiers were forced to squeeze into a cramped space with closed hatches.
