1. The Gainesville & Northwestern Railroad Marker
You are walking along a portion of the Gainesville & Northwestern Railroad, incorporated in 1912. The tracks were laid to carry lumber from the mill in Helen to Gainesville and the world beyond.
Connecting Communities
This railroad line covered 37 miles. In addition to lumber from the mill in Helen, it also carried passengers. With the railroad, people could more easily travel to Cleveland and Gainesville to shop. The train also carried the mail.
From Forest to Mill
About 150 miles of narrow-gauge logging railroads transported logs from the hills to the mill. During World War I, much of the lumber was exported for the war effort.
Mining Minerals
Branch lines of the railroad carried raw materials r=from area mines. Amphibole asbestos was extensively mined in the Nacoochee Valley. Resembling petrified wood, the mineral was turned into fire-proof cloth and electrical insulation.
