Inscription. Admiral Memorial Circle commemorates the outstanding military achievement of Admiral John P. Weinel. Admiral Weinel was born in Columbia in 1916 and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1939. His military career included command of fighter-bomber squadrons, air groups, an aircraft carrier and a carrier task force. He participated in seven campaigns in World War II the Korean War and the Vietnam War (1942-1968). His numerous decorations include five Distinguished Service Medals, two Legions of Merit and the Gallantry Cross. Admiral Weinel's final assignment was as United States Military Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) 1974-1977.
