1. Steilsteven / Steep Bow Rival Marker
De Steilsteven is een relatief 'jong' scheepsontwerp en komt niet, zoals bij aken en tjalken, voort uit de houtbouw. Het is een voorbeeld van een scheepsontwerp dat voortkwam uit de nieuwe mogelijkheden die ijzer- en later staalbouw de scheepswerven boden. Dit scheepstype werd ook wel een Groninger spits genoemd vanwege de grote vrachtcapaciteit. Maar ook omdat bij de bouw van de steilstevens werd gekeken naar de afmetingen van sluizen en kanalen in dit deel van het land.
Veel onderdelen van een schip zijn genoemd naar lichaamsdelen. Zo heeft een schip een kop (lief of lelijk), een neus, een buik (denning), huid en een kont (het achterschip).
Scheepsnamen worden weldoordacht gekozen. In dit geval werd het schip 'Rival' genoemd, dat niet verwijst naar rivaliteit, maar volgens de schipper een acroniem is van 'Rijkdom In Voorspoed, Arbeid en Liefde'. Het is bijzonder dat een schip, na bijna 100 jaar, nog steeds haar originele scheepsnaam heeft.

The Steilsteven is a relatively recent ship design and, unlike barges and tjalks, does not originate from timber construction. It is an example of a ship design that emerged from the new possibilities offered by iron and later steel construction to shipyards. This ship type was also called a "Groningen spits" (Groningen barge) because of its large cargo capacity. It was also built taking into account the dimensions of locks and canals in this part of the country.
Many parts of a ship are named after body parts. For example, a ship has a head (beautiful or ugly), a nose, a belly (the denning), a skin, and a back (the stern).

2. Bow of Rival
Since its launch in 1929, the 'Rival' has changed owners only twice: 1989 and 2010. The first owners used the ship as a freighter for scrap metal, fertilizer, etc., until 1976. In 1976, they finally retired, and the ship served as their bridgekeeper's house until 1989. The second owner converted the ship, which served as a houseboat for him, into a sailing charter in 1992. The current owners still sail this robust, steep-steep bow on day and multi-day trips with groups of up to 40 people. This is not only their job, but also their passion.
