Inscription.
The Conestoga wagon, built in Lancaster County, PA, is a heavy-duty covered wagon that was used extensively during the early 18th and 19th Centuries in the eastern U.S. and Canada. It was large enough to transport loads up to six tons and was drawn by horses, mules, or oxen. The wagon's curved floor centered the load between the wheels to prevent tipping and shifting. Outside the wagon, one might find water barrels, toolboxes, and a livestock feed box. The early freight wagon was not intended to be ridden—the left horse near the wagon was referred to as the wheel horse. The wagon had a brake handle on the left side between the two wheels, and a teamster either walked beside it or could ride on a pull-out board that provided access to the brake handle.
