Inscription. Located in the field before you is a slave cemetery. Marked on historic maps, little is known about this cemetery or the people buried here.

Research using ground penetrating radar in 2015 found at least 61 probable burials.
 
Erected 2016 by National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

Location. 37° 22.506′ N, 78° 48.154′ W. Marker is in Appomattox, Virginia, in Appomattox County. It can be reached from Old Courthouse Road (Virginia Route 24) 0.2 miles east of Gordon Drive, on the right when traveling east. Marker is within Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, on the Grant's Approach Trail, accessible on foot from the North Carolina Monument Wayside. Touch for map. Regarding Slave Cemetery. The cemetery is historically associated with the Raine family, which built the house that later became famous as the McLean House. The Raines operated a tavern next door to the house after selling it, and their family cemetery (marked by the Raine Monument) is about 125' west of the Slave Cemetery marker.
