The result of the merging on this site in 1899 of two institutions founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society as follows:

1865 - Richmond Theological School for Freemen
1865 - Wayland Seminary, Washington, D.C.
1932 - Hartshorn Memorial College (opened in 1883 for the training of women) united with the university.
