1. Another First for Sun City Marker
If you GOOGLE first golf car community in the country you will find none other than Del Webb's Sun City Arizona. It should come as no surprise; we were the first age restricted community complete with amenities built and ready to enjoy in 1960.
By 1962 there were two recreation centers and two 18 hole golf courses. Getting to them, along with the shopping center, was all about convenience. For the most part, those big old cars were awful on gas mileage so having economical electric golf cars was an incredible option.
Initially three-wheelers were the standard, but safety was an issue and quickly four-wheeled cars became the rage. The beauty of Sun City was (and still is) land was plentiful and streets were made wide enough for car lanes and golf cars sharing roadways.
The Del E Webb Corporation (DEVCO) quickly came to understand how popular golf cars would become and garage and carport parking were mainstays in almost every home model

Golf cars became a way of life. No one is quite sure but 10,000 plus cars is a safe projection yet today. Imagine how cool it was back in 1962 to buzz down to the Grand Ave Safeway in your Cushman golf car...and then picture today the joys of jumping in your trendy new Polaris RZR and doing the same as you visit Fry's for your daily dose of bananas.

You name it, they have it for the keys to their home are the keys to this entire city. They may have been musicians, or farmers, or maybe he was a doctor, or an accountant, or a military man, or...but that was yesterday. Today, they're launched on a brand new career: developing new talents, playing an important part in their community...doing exactly what they want. Individually, they make their own friends and enjoy their choice of cultural, club and social activities. Together, they're living the happiest life they've ever known. Maybe they retired on generous annuities or just a simple pension, but it makes no difference because here no one's interested in keeping with the Jones'-they're all too busy just being themselves and enjoying it all.
They have everything they could want for everything they could want to do...and it all costs so little. Reserved for them and their neighbors and their visiting friends, children and grandchildren is the riviera-size swimming pool, the complete Town Hall, shuffleboard courts and a lawn bowling green, an Agricultural Center and a fully-equipped Arts & Crafts Center. Full use of all these facilities costs each resident just $20 per year and they play a championship golf course at greatly reduced rates. There's a Shopping Center, Medical Center and Del Webb's HiwayHouse, too, right in town. And Where do these privileged people live? In top-quality homes and cooperative apartments priced from just $9,950. Owners must be on the freedom side of fifty, but partners can be of any adult age.
