Pollinator Gardens
There is nothing more lovely than a garden spilling over with bright blooms and sweet smells. But flower gardens do more than offer us beautiful places to enjoy. Flower gardens are a buffet of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, beetles, and hundreds of other insects. Sadly, many important insects such as bees and butterflies are in decline. Pollinator gardens, even small ones, can make a huge difference in helping to support pollinator communities affected by the loss of habitat, invasive plants, and the use of chemicals.
Pollinators
Pollinators are insects, birds, bats, and even small mammals that deliberately or inadvertently carry pollen from one plant to another plant. Pollen is essential for the fertilization of fruits and vegetables. If there were no pollinators, we couldn't grow fresh food. Nearly 90% of flowering plants rely on animal pollinators for fertilization. Be sure to visit Aiken's other pollinator gardens along Park Avenue and between Laurens and Union streets.
