Regulus Cruise Missile
The Navy's first operational nuclear-capable missile, Regulus featured folding wings and a tail fin so it could be carried on a submarine. Submarines had to surface and the crews had to work on the main deck in order to assemble and launch the missile. The men assigned the task were "black and blue afterward due to the physical and mental strain of preparing the launch while exposed to rough weather on the surface.
Five submarines were adapted or specifically built with hangars to carry Regulus missiles. From 1958 through 1964, USS Tunny (SSG-282), Barbero (SSG-317), Grayback (SSG-574), Growler (SSG-577), and Halibut (SSGN-587) completed 41 strategic deterrence patrols armed with Regulus missiles.
